Facing Detection

‘Facing Detection’ was a workshop for the intensive programme and symposium How Near is Here at Collective, Edinburgh in September 2014. Beginning from the idea that the built environment and public space is increasingly permeated by ‘smart’ technologies, we looked at the aesthetics of different facial recognition technologies and then, sampling for example emotion recognition maps, we and the participants made individual masks. The goal was to produce masks which would then camouflage our faces and avoid detection by that very technology. We then went out onto Calton Hill and staged a group selfie-taking performance. We posted the images taken on social media, with the hashtag calton hill, flooding that category of images.
